After days in Namibia’s dusty deserts, we arrived in Swakopmund, a vibrant coastal town near Namib-Naukluft National Park. Its cool sea breeze, sandy beaches, and charming German-style buildings were a refreshing escape. Swakopmund blends a relaxed atmosphere with a rich history, shaped by its German colonial past.
The town feels like a slice of Germany by the Atlantic. Colourful historic buildings, such as the Hohenzollernhaus and Altes Amtsgericht (Old Magistrate’s Court), boast distinctive gabled roofs and tidy designs. German settlers arrived in the late 1800s, leaving a legacy of culture and cuisine. We enjoyed German-style cakes and sausages at local cafés.
We strolled along the German-built jetty, over a century old, savouring a sunset with a glass of crisp white wine or a chilled draught beer. At a beachside street-food spot, we tucked into fresh, affordable fish and chips, soaking up the relaxed atmosphere.
After exploring, we settled at Tiger Reef Campsite, close to the beach, pub, and restaurant. On our first evening, we stopped by the pub but were unprepared for the fresh sea breeze—shorts and sandals were a chilly mistake! The next morning, we bought long trousers in town, as Swakopmund’s weather was variable. The campsite was adequate but felt cramped, with pitches close together. The ablutions were satisfactory, with hot water available, though often busy. **Tips**: Pack warm layers for Swakopmund’s chilly evenings. Book Tiger Reef Campsite early during peak season (May–October). Bring sturdy tent pegs for sandy ground, and expect busy ablutions.
So freezing we had to warm up with some Gluhwein!
Our camping size “big screen” tv to watch our Bokke!! A boer or rather camper always makes a plan.
Local gin brewery - StillHouse (was our gin of choice during our trip)
A whiskey sours to wash down delicious calamari.
Campsite Name: Tiger Reef
Nights stay: 5
Price per couple per night: R430
Ablutions: Good
Overall opinion of campsite: A large well-maintained campsite – they’re currently doing renovations and improvements. Sites are fairly close together and you’re in trouble if you have noisy drunk neighbours setting up tents at 2.30am!
Personal rating: 3/5
