The morning after a hearty coffee and breakfast at Koiimasis Ranch, we set off along the D707, turning towards our next stop: NamibRand Family Hideout. Born from the ruins of an abandoned Karakul sheep farm, this 200,000-hectare NamibRand Nature Reserve, adjacent to Namib-Naukluft National Park, was established in the 1980s by conservation-minded owners. It’s also Africa’s only International Dark-Sky Reserve, a haven for stargazers and photographers seeking that perfect shot.

The campsites, nestled among the dunes and spaced a kilometer apart for privacy, are a delight. Solar-powered lights and hot water, plus a nearby waterhole attracting oryx, springbok, and bat-eared foxes, create a magical setting. We enjoyed a short drive through the dunes, soaking in the vast landscape and a stunning sunset. Spending two nights here en route to Sesriem is an absolute must.
