Departing from Lylius Campsite, we journeyed towards Nieuwoudtville via Clanwilliam, pausing briefly in Vanrhynsdorp for a coffee and a savoury mutton pie. We visited the Quiver Tree Nursery before embarking on the scenic drive to Nieuwoudtville.
The weather was somewhat overcast and hazy, yet the vistas remained breathtaking. A brief delay at a stop-go point at the base of Vanrhyns Pass held us up momentarily.
Upon arriving in Nieuwoudtville, we stopped at a delightful roadside stall offering the finest roosterkoek, just before the dorp. We enjoyed a refreshing beer at the Blou Huis before continuing to our destination, Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm Camp. There, we were warmly welcomed by our hostess, Aldri, whose engaging company was a highlight. The campsites were exceptional, boasting splendid views, hot water, and immaculate facilities.
The following day, we explored Nieuwoudtville, beginning with the historic Dutch Reformed Church. Its foundation stone was laid shortly after the Anglo-Boer War, with construction completed in 1907 using finely dressed sandstone. The intricate pressed ceilings and wrought-iron railings, transported by oxcart from Piketberg, added to its charm. The pristine white sandstone pulpit, remarkably untouched by time, stood as a defining feature (Source: Tracks4Africa).
Next, we visited the Nieuwoudtville Falls, a serene spot perfect for a relaxing hour. Returning to the Blou Huis, we indulged in another refreshing drink. On our way back to camp, we stopped at Die Padstal, where we savored a hearty mutton soup served with freshly baked bread. Back at the campsite, we lit a fire and enjoyed a traditional braai featuring succulent lamb chops and local sirloin steak.
